National Hunt trainer at Ravenswell Farm, Withington, near Cheltenham in the heart of the Cotswolds. The stables were completed in 2019 and boast some of the finest facilities in the UK.
Fergal has been involved in horse racing since he left Ireland in 1989 and learnt his trade under Captain Tim Forster. He then spent 20 years progressing through the ranks, to become head lad and assistant trainer, under Nigel Twiston-Davies. He first setup his own yard in 2011.
They have 80 boxes, at the stable, split across two barns. The facilities include a four furlong gallop and a three furlong, deep sand, round gallop, plus all-weather schooling strip and state of the art horse walker. The site includes a video showing the sand gallop being laid and provides a brief glimpse of Fergal's horse in training.
He instigated the Fergal O'Brien Racing Partnerships (FOBRP) in 2016/17, with the aim to bring together groups of like-minded people, into the world of racehorse ownership, at a fraction of the cost of outright ownership.
Each partnership consists of, usually 8 -12 people, who express an interest. Once the group has been formed, he sources a horse, usually from the Irish point-to-point scene, to match their budget (normally around £20k). Partnership members have enjoyed some memorable days racing, including a runner at the Cheltenham Festival.
Partnership members are welcome to visit the stables whenever they wish, to see their horse in training.
