Fraction to Decimal Odds Conversion

How To Convert

Traditionally bookmakers have always expressed betting odds as a fraction, representing the amount you'd win on your bet if your horse wins the race. So for example if you placed a £10 bet at odds of 2/1 you'd win £20, plus you'd get your stake back, giving a total return of £30.

With the advent of betting exchanges it's become more and more popular to express odds as a decimal number. This enables the exchanges to provide much smaller increments in odds than is possible using fractions. When odds are expressed as decimals the value is the actual amount you'll receive back if the horse wins (i.e. including your returned bet stake) so looking at our 2/1 example above, it will be expressed as 3.0, which represents our return of £30.

The simple formular to convert from fraction odds to decimal is to divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number) and add 1. The 1 represents the returned stake which is included in the decimal odds but not in the fraction odds.

Example 1:
Odds of 2/1, will be 2 divided by 1, which gives 2, then add 1 equals 3.

Example 2:
Odds of 9/4, will be 9 divided by 4, which gives 2.25, then add 1 equals 3.25.
